DETAIL
We have now reviewed the
plans and our comments are:
1. We oppose the demolition of the existing barns as they do
have significant historical context in Baldock. This is the last
remaining farmstead within Baldock and the barns have been
recognised as such by NHDC and included on their list of
Buildings of Local Importance and The Hertfordshire Building
Preservation Trust. We understand this farm complex was possibly
constructed by Vickris Pryor, the Pryor family being of major
influence on the development of Baldock (this is well
documented). This was a high status planned farmstead which
produced grain for the adjacent malting (now demolished) and
therefore this complex is of significant historical context to
Baldock. The is historical evidence of farms on this site prior
to the farmstead being built in the 18/19 Century.
There is also significant and
rare Architectural Detailing on the yellow brick buildings.
Polychrome bricks (red/black) have been used in blind arcading
and chamfered and stock brick recesses around doorframes and
window frames are evident. Also, there are metal ventilation
grilles and detailed door hinges apparent. It is these unusual
details on a farmstead complex that indicate the High Status
of this farm and with the link to the Pryor family, the
only responsible conclusion that any authoritative body could
arrive at is that they must not be demolished.
We have no further observations.
Thank you for considering our views on this matter.
Kind regards,
Chairman
Baldock Society
